Bee DNA & VENATION

Bee DNA and VENATION... SAMPLES NEEDED

Hello,

Here is the questionnaire that must accompany the samples. It is OK to leave some fields blank, but efforts should be made to avoid leaving some fields blank.
This is for some research where we are trying to find out what are the different subspecies of western honeybees in Southwest Florida. The idea is to get between 100 and 200 samples of bees (each sample accounts for 30-50 intact worker bees preserved in ethanol) which will be processed for bee venation using the software identify (http://drawwing.org/) as well as bee satellite DNA identification. This will help refining the software identify but also to find out about the level of Africanization of bees in southwest Florida.

Important: as outlined in the questionnaire, you must:
  • source denatured ethanol (ethyl alcohol). Denatured ethanol has some methanol in it up to 50% to make it undrinkable, or other agents are added to make it unpalatable. DO NOT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL (= denatured isopropyl alcohol). Denatured ethanol can be found in the paint section of hardware stores. Example: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Jasco-1-Quart-Kerosene-Glass-Cleaner/1000147037, not as good (unknown amount of methanol) https://www.lowes.com/pd/Jasco-1-Quart-Kerosene-Glass-Cleaner/1000147037, or https://www.walmart.com/ip/Klean-Strip-Denatured-Alcohol-1-Quart/23232923?athbdg=L1600
  • containers could be urine cups or alike but make sure they are clean and small and well-sealed. Make sure the containers are full of ethanol to prevent the bees from moving too much in the container.

We need those samples ASAP to get the undergrad student research started. This should have ideally taken place at the last bee meeting but it did not happened for some reasons. There will be several students working on this project. Email to sethomas@fgcu.edu for questions. Please, use in your subject line: BeeDNA so that I can track it easily.

Thank you all for your help. Such an analysis is normally about 125-150 dollars a sample. So, for free plus the cost of supplies and stamp to mail the sample is a real bargain. See how to deliver the samples to my lab below next to my signature.
Cheers to all.

Serge

Drop samples tp the bee meeting next week, at FGCU or send samples to:
